Aoki Haruo    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Mr. Haruo Aoki breeds Nishikigoi in Ojiya-city, Niigata. His special ability to breed new varieties is unsurpassed. No one has ever succeeded in breeding the varieties he has bread. Once, his Kikokuryu caused a sensation in the Nishikigoi world. His Kikokuryu had Platinum-colored skin with Sumi on it. On Platinum-colored skin, red and yellow easily appear. However, on Platinum-colored skin, it was almost impossible for Sumi to appear. His superb Koi gave the Nishikigoi world a big shock. His name came to be seen a lot in a section of Hikari Mono of the All Japan Nishikigoi Show and the Wakagoi show afterwards. He has always pursued new, high quality varieties. He is a great challenger. An article on Mr. Aoki can be found in the July/August 2003, Volume 28, Issue 1 of Koi USA magazine; see page(s) 32-34

Genjiro Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Top class Kohaku in Japan inherits its growth nature from Sensuke Kohaku and its deep, beautiful red from Tomoin Kohaku.

The Sensuke Kohaku and Tomoin Kohaku both originated from Genjiro Koi Farm. Mr. Takashi Kobayashi, the present owner, is a fourth generation breeder. His great grandfather, the founder of Genjiro Koi Farm, bred excellent Koi. These Koi were the ancestors that contributed to the production of Tomoin and Sensuke. Genjiro Kohaku, in this regard, is recognized as one of the origin of the Kohaku bloodline.

In Taisho Sanke production as well, Genjiro Koi Farm owns a pure “Sadazo Sanke” which has produced many generations of Koi during the 36 years the Kobayashi Family has owned it. Sadazo Sanke is one of three famous Sanke bloodlines along with Jinbei and Torazo. It is most likely that Genjiro is the only breeder that uses the pure blood of Sadazo Sanke as its parent. It is due to the purity of this bloodline, that the Sumi and Hi quality are both first class.

Takashi also acquired a number of quality Hikarimono parents from his father (Hirokichi) and breeds the Hikarimono varieties of Kujyaku and Matsuba. As a matter of fact, Hirokichi, Takashi’s father was responsible for the stabilizing of Yamabuki Ogon.

Nishikigoi is a kind of art that has patterns on glive fish.h And breeders who produce Nishikigoi are nothing but artists. With any great talent, it is still indispensable to learn what Nishikigoi is as a living creature from the basis. They need to learn the basis from good teachers and seniors.

Mr. Hisato Nogami learnt the Koi from the late Minoru Mano, the founder of Dainichi Koi Farm who made the great contribution to Koi world. Study for 3-5 years would be enough to learn how to breed. Takahashi Koi Farm was founded in 1958. It is a nearly 40 year experienced breeder. He breed various kinds such as Showa, Taisho Sanke, Kohaku, Asagi, Hikarimono etc. The main breed is Showa. He breeds 80,000-100,000 every year, and its 50% is Showa.

The reason lies in nothing but its clay quality of the area. Takahashi Koi Farm is located at Kita Uonuma county of Niigata. Kita Uonuma county has a very suitable clay for Showa breeding. While that of Yamakoshi area in Ojiya is clayey, that of Kita Uonuma country contains sands in it. Because of the clay quality, Mr. Takahashi breeds mainly Showa.

In addition, Uonuma county used to have many silk factories, Koi breeding industry that uses many silkworm pupae from the factories developed.

His Showa is characterized in good pattern and also by that the Hi is red and bright.

Takano Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Mr. Yoshio Takano in the area of Takezawa, Ojiya city specializes in Budo Koromo. Purple has been considered an “illusive color”, a very difficult color to produce on Koi. Many breeders have attempted to create this spectacular color and failed.

Mr. Takano completed the breeding of the mysterious and “hard to achieve” purple coloring of Budo Koromo. His Budo Koromo maintains its beautiful purple appearance, which has made it extremely popular. An important characteristic of the underground color is that the Hi is not revealed. Usually, Aigoromo shows its Hi color very clearly, but Mr. Takano’s Budo Koromo have Hi and Ai colors blended so smoothly that it creates this extraordinary purple color. Another nice characteristic we see is the unique whiteness of the skin—this makes a wonderful contrast for the purple color.

The Budo Koromo variety is really hard to come by because there are so few breeders involved in the production of it. We are happy to have the opportunity of bringing quality Budo Koromo from Mr. Takano and Mr. Tanaka, Marujyu Koi Farm to our customers. This desirable variety is difficult to obtain.

Niigata, Japan is known worldwide as the origin of Nishikigoi. About 40 years ago, there were more than 6000 breeders. Currently, however, there are only 200.

Excellent breeders are probably about 50 out of the 200. 6000 breeders has been weeded out to 200 and now 50. This severe fact derives from the nature of Nishikigoi being an gart.h

If one were not able to breed gbeautiful Nishikigoi recognized by everybody,h that one is automatically forced to go out of business. Nishikigoi world is a very high competition world.

Mr. Kiichi Hoshino at Teradomari Koi Farm has been in this fierce Koi breeding business for 30 years. Passing through many trials and errors, he has established gTERADOMARIh brand with Ginrin Kohaku.

In Japan, there is All Japan Koi Show. Winning gBest in Varietyh prize is one of the big goals for breeders and at the same time it is the best way to have the breederfs brand recognized.

Mr. Hoshino challenged gBest in Varietyh with Ginrin Kohaku and successfully won the prize.

His Koi achieved gBest in Varietyh at All Japan Koi Show many times and made his recognition immovable.

He is a Japanese representing breeder of Ginrin Kohaku.

One of his representative works.

Uonuma Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
In Niigata, there are approximately 650 Koi breeders. But there are only three breeders from which I have purchased a Koi that was singly worth over $100,000. They are Dainichi, Kokugyokan and Uonuma. There are not many Koi that justify to the dealer the decision to spend more than $100,000 on it. I have purchased 2 of this kind of Koi from Uonuma. Of course, both of them are jumbo, meaning more than 80cm (32 in.) long and have been nominated for grand champion at All Japan Nishikigoi Shows.

Uonuma Koi Farm is one of those rare breeders of excellence! However, because he is very selective in breeding his Koi, it is difficult to obtain his Koi whenever you want them.

Urakawa Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Urakawa Koi Farm is also known as Torazo. He breeds quality Kohaku and Taisho Sanke.

He says "it is not necessarily true that I can get good parents if I pay good money, but it is true that if I do not spend enough money for parents, I can not breed super top quality Nishikigoi." He also says, "I always try to keep and raise fewer number of fries in a mud pond, instead of keeping and raising many fries in a mud pond. And I will select 2 year-old Tategoi (potential Koi) out of them based on my sense of beauty."

His policy really polishes the quality of Koi. I believe you can enjoy the quality of Torazo.

Yamacho Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
His Koi, especially Platinum, is famous around the world. His Platinum has pure platinum body with no dull color. About 20 years ago, he mixed female Platinum from Yamazaki Koi Farm and male Gin Matsuba from Hoshiyone Koi Farm to make the parental Platinum. I think the success of his Platinum derives from mixing blood of Gin Matsuba from Hoshiyone.

Platinum is a very sensitive variety and more difficult variety to breed than the others. But he breeds Platinum vigorously every year. He culls three times during the summer time to select 6,000 out of 100,000. It is quite amazing that the culling is as strict as the other varieties even in Platinum.

Yamamatsu Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Yamamatsu Koi Farm or “Matsunosuke” is an established breeder with the history of 80 years in Niigata.

Especially, in 1994, Matsunosuke Sanke whose nickname is “Himiko” won Grand champion at All Japan Combined Nishikigoi Show. Also, in 1995, his other Sanke won Grand champion at the show. The great achievements made “Matsunosuke” the immovable brand in Koi.

He also won Grand champion at the same Koi show with Kohaku.

The characteristic of this bloodline is the growth. They grow over 32 in. easily. Grand champion will be picked out of Koi over 32 in. So it is an absolute condition to be Grand champion that Koi comes from bloodlines that can grow over 32 in. Also, Koi must not only grow large but also become beautiful.

We are proud that we introduce Matsunosuke at our auction.

The Hoshino has devoted in Koi breeding for 92 years since grand fatherfs generation at the Mecca of Nishikigoi, Yamakoshi village. His Shiro Utsuri is especially known for its quality.

Another quality breed is probably a Midorigoi. Because Midorigoi is mainly Doitsu (scale less), it is hard to get good scalations on the back. His Midorigoi has good scalations and the color is excellent.

Goshiki is also interesting. His Goshiki has its Hi stronger as it grows though it is very week at the age of 1.

Yamasan Koi Farm    (0 Koi in Auction)    View Breeder's Koi
Yamasan Koi Farm is famous as a breeder of Platinum and Doitsu Hariwake. Yamacho Koi Farm, famous platinum breeder, chose Koi of Yamasan as a parent of Platinum.

Now, Yamasan Koi Farm is more famous for Doitsu Hariwake than Platinum. Doitsu Hariwake of Yamasan has skin which shines in platinum-color. And the pattern of the bright yellow like a Japanese globe flower on the skin becomes very beautiful. Accordingly this Koi can win a prize at a Koi show
